4 Lessons You Can Learn as a Freelancer from Miss Universe 2019

The stars of the universe have descended to grace us with their beauty. Held in Atlanta, Georgia, Miss Universe 2019 just concluded last December 8, 2019. And the universe has spoken.

With their display of elegance and intelligence, one can learn valuable lessons for their freelancing career. Yes! We can get nuggets of wisdom from this prestigious event. Here are 4 lessons you can learn in Miss Universe as a Freelancer.

Failing Forward

Ms. South Africa didn’t get the Miss Universe crown in a silver platter. She tried and failed to win the Miss South Africa crown last 2017. She just ended up as a semi-finalist last 2017.

But she didn’t stop and competed again in 2019 and won. Now, she even triumphed to get the Miss Universe crown.

In our freelancing careers, we don’t always win in all our endeavors. There are times when we fail to get the clients. Or we may even make mistakes when delivering services. But if we stop pursuing what we really want, we won’t get there.

It’s time to fail forward. Reassess what can be improved and try again.

Be Hungry for Knowledge

Zozibini Tunzi loved to read books. In her IG post, she said:

“The first book I ever picked up to read belonged to my grandmother.

“She gifted it to me because I loved sitting on her lap, pretending to read whenever she was doing it.”

“She never had an opportunity to further her studies due to past apartheid laws, but she made it a point to be knowledgeable.”

“Till today, even with her horrible eyesight, you will never catch her without a book in her hand. Because of her, I have a thirst for knowledge and a love for reading. She sparked a flame in me to always want to do more and to be more.”

As freelancers, we should be voracious learners. All of us can access information relevant to our industry. We should strive to be updated and upgrade ourselves to serve our clients better.

Going Above the Norm

In one of her answers during the pageant, Zozibini Tunzi fights to change the status quo. She said:

“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful. And I think that it is time that it stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face, and I want to see their faces reflected in mine.”

She has chosen to show her true self in the pageant without adjusting to “modern standards of beauty.”

Freelancing is not “normal work” as of the moment. Some people (even your family members) might think that you are wasting your time with your freelancing career. But I tell you, the prospects of freelancing and remote work will continue to be better as time goes by.

As a freelancer today, you can get a career and financial growth from your online jobs. Let’s go above the norm, regardless if people accept it or not.

Lead and Aim for Something Bigger than Yourself

Lead and Aim for Something Bigger than Yourself

Zozibini Tunzi is not only a beauty queen. She is an activist against gender-based violence. She lobbies for gender equality and peace. It is evident in one of her answers:

“I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time, not because we don’t want to, but because of what society has labeled women to be.”

“I think we are the most powerful beings in the world and that we should be given every opportunity and that is what we should be teaching these young girls, to take up space, nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself, thank you.”

As freelancers today, we are leaders to a global movement that will change how people will see work. Right now, we have the ability to design our lifestyle because of location independence and time flexibility.

And if we aim to be leaders of the industry, our careers will not only boom financially; it will also help spread the beauty of freelancing as well. Kudos to the winners and the contestants of the Miss Universe. Continue inspiring people to be the best that they can be.
